THE BOX FACTORY CELEBRATES ITS 30th ANNIVERSARY WITH
AN ART AUCTION, FOOD & DRINK, AND A SPECIAL CONCERT
ST. JOSEPH, MI – In 1995, something extraordinary happened in the local art community. Looking for a place to meet and exhibit their art, a collective of artists known as the Berrien Artist Guild purchased an old, three-story building in St. Joseph that used to house a box factory. In the 30 years since, the Box Factory for the Arts has become a bustling, multidisciplinary art center known for its ongoing art exhibitions, dozens of artist studios, concerts and shows by noted performers, classes, a gift shop and more.
Now it’s time to celebrate with an evening of art, live music and friends — not to mention great food and drinks! The Box Factory invites the public to its 30th Anniversary Benefit & Concert on Saturday, June 14, from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Box Factory, 1101 Broad St.
Get your tickets today: $75 pp at ticketstripe.com/boxfactory30. Advance sales only; tickets will not be available at the door. The event is sponsored by Honor Credit Union.
The evening will kick off with a pre-concert reception offering signature cocktails at the cash bar and complimentary charcuterie stations featuring food from Sally’s Front Porch Catering. There will be a silent auction in which guests can bid on a selection of one-of-a-kind works of art and special services donated by Box Factory studio artists and tenants. Several exceptional pieces, including fine art, jewelry and a private in-home concert by Bryan Lubeck, will be featured in a live auction hosted by popular auctioneer Dan McCrery.
The highlight of the evening, beginning at 7:15 p.m., is a special, unplugged concert by Amazon #1 Best Selling musician Bryan Lubeck, joined by talented pianist/vocalist Andrew Fisher. Lubeck’s music combines sensitive ballads and flamenco-inspired rhythms in a performance Billboard Magazine described as "a tapestry of fiery Spanish guitar and cool urban grooves.
Lubeck, who grew up in the area, credits a long-past concert at the Box Factory with helping him start his musical journey. “I always love performing at The Box Factory for the Arts,” he said. “It’s where I held my first instrumental concert, a pivotal moment that helped launch my recording and touring career.”
Last year Lubeck returned to perform his “Echoes of Barcelona” concert to a sold-out crowd at the Box Factory. On June 14, he and fellow musicians will bring his high-energy show to celebrate the Box Factory’s 30th anniversary. Check out his music at www.bryanlubeck.com.
The Box Factory’s 30th anniversary celebration also has special meaning for Robert Williams, who as president of the Berrien Artist Guild in 1995 played a key role in the building’s purchase and eventual transformation into a beloved community resource. He recalls that the group of artists was initially looking for a small space to rent when they happened upon the vacant 51,000-square-foot building that used to house the Williams Bros. Paper Manufacturing Company, a producer of “fancy boxes” for many name-brand products.
It took a huge leap of faith for the guild to purchase the building on a land contract with no money down, and to rehabilitate the former manufacturing facility into four galleries and individual spaces to rent out. “There was no heat and the electricity was useless,” Williams recalls. “We had to put all-new wiring in and build new staircases.” That was just the beginning of the extensive repairs.
Fast forward to today. The Box Factory building now houses a mix of nearly 70 artist studios and commercial businesses. The volunteer-run Box Factory for the Arts hosts six annual building-wide art exhibitions and dozens of stage performances that attract artists and audiences from throughout the Michiana region. While improvements are ongoing, original wood floors, soaring ceilings and massive windows maintain the building’s century-old charm. “It’s so much better than I ever dreamed,” said Williams, who continues to paint portraits and teach painting classes out of his studio on the second floor.
