Back in the early 1800s, survey crews had their hands full trying to stake out the townships that are still the building blocks for local government in Michigan. Who were the first surveyors? How did they draw the lines? How did they chart the marshland that made up so much of Harbor Country back then? What markers could they use to let people know where the boundaries were?
Retired college professor and Sawyer resident Bob Tatina has done a deep dive into how the first surveyors came up with the lines we still, in many cases, use today. Bob will even have on hand some of the equipment used by early surveyors on hand.
Tatina's presentation-- part of The Region of Three Oaks' Museum's celebration of America 250-- will take place at Three Oaks Heritage Hall, 8 E. Linden St., on Friday, September 4 at 5 PM. Admission is free for museum members. Non-members, $5.
