Description
The Region of Three Oaks Museum's Nick Bogert will show and tell you about the massive Federal raid on a meeting of the US Communist Party in, of all places, Bridgman, Michigan 100 years ago. On August 22, 1922, Federal agents swarmed a resort in the Bridgman dunes, arresting several delegates to the convention. The Feds crowed they'd dealt a death blow to the US Communist movement, but within a few years, even Berrien County's chief prosecutor admitted the whole thing had been a big mistake. It's a fascinating tale of cloak-and-dagger investigation that resulted in legal cases raising huge issues of freedom of speech and assembly that reached the US Supreme Court. The Power Point presentation is free, though donations to the nonprofit museum will be accepted.
